From around 300-400 for gardens up to 400-500 m² with a boundary wire, between 500 and 900 for 500-1,000 m² or models with an app and sensors, and from 700 to 2,000 or more for wire-free models with GPS/RTK or vision, and for large areas or steep slopes.
With a boundary wire: cheaper, proven and reliable technology, but you have to install and bury a wire around the whole perimeter. Wire-free (GPS/RTK or vision): much faster installation and no wire to break, but more expensive and a bit more sensitive to obstacles, dense trees or poor signal coverage. For most medium gardens, the wire is still the safest option.
Most are water-resistant and can work in the rain, but cutting wet grass clogs the blades, leaves marks and can encourage fungi. Ideally, set the robot to pause in the rain (many have a sensor or connect to the weather via app) and work when the grass is dry.
The blades are small, sit under the chassis and stop when the robot is lifted or tilted; they also detect obstacles and brake. Even so, it shouldn't run with small children playing on the lawn unsupervised, and it's best to schedule it to avoid the hours the garden is in use.
Changing the blades every 1-3 months depending on use (they're cheap), cleaning the chassis and wheel area every few weeks, checking the boundary wire in spring, and storing the robot and its base under cover in winter in frost-prone climates. The battery usually lasts 3-5 years.
It works well in single-zone gardens or with passages at least 60-70 cm wide. Very fragmented gardens, with many beds, steps or areas separated by paths, need guide modules or splitting the job, and some budget models don't cover them well. Check your garden's shape before buying.
