Robot lawn mower vs manual mower: is it worth it?

An honest comparison with real 5-year cost, time saved, lawn quality, environmental impact, noise and the specific cases where the robot does NOT pay off.

The question always comes the same way: "is it really worth spending €600-1,500 on a robot lawn mower when I can cut it myself in half an hour?". The honest answer is: it depends on the size of the lawn, on how much you value your time and on the shape of your garden. For a 300 m² lawn in one piece, the robot is one of the best purchases you can make for the garden. For 60 m² fragmented into four flower beds with steps, it's throwing money away. This article covers the numbers over five years, the comparison of lawn quality and environmental impact, and — most useful — the specific cases where the answer is "no".

Real 5-year cost (350 m² lawn)

Let's take a very common size for a house: 350 m² of continuous lawn.

The robot costs about €450-600 more over five years than an electric mower (less than a petrol one). In return it gives you back more than 100 hours a year and, as we'll see, a better lawn. If you value your hour of leisure at more than €1.50, the robot "wins" on the spreadsheet. And there's a factor that's hard to put in the table: many petrol mowers don't reach 5 years without a serious carburettor or starter repair, while a well-cared-for robot does; and a cheap electric mower also tends to last a short time.

And for an 800 m² lawn?

The bigger the lawn, the more the robot wins: 800 m² by hand is 30-40 sessions a year of 1-1.5 hours each, more than 150 hours a year. The robot is around €1,000-1,400 over 5 years, but the time saving is enormous and the result far superior.

Lawn quality: there's no debate

The robot leaves a better lawn, and it's easy to explain. By cutting little and often (2-3 mm every day instead of 5-6 cm every 15 days):

  • The grass tillers (puts out more shoots from the base) and thickens up to cover the dry patches and smother the moss.
  • The tiny clippings break down on the spot and act as fertiliser and mulch: less watering, less fertiliser. The nitrogen from the grass returns to the lawn instead of leaving in a bag.
  • The "yellow stripes effect" of cutting a lot at once disappears — that stresses the plant and leaves it brown for a few days.
  • The colour is more uniform because there's never a freshly cut part next to one that was done a while ago.
  • The broadleaf weeds don't get to flower or seed, and the dense grass leaves them no room to germinate.

The manual mower, on the other hand, gives you two things the robot doesn't: you can collect the clippings (useful if you have ongoing fungus problems and want to remove the inoculum from the garden, or if you let the lawn grow a lot) and you can vary the cutting height at will depending on the season (higher in summer to shade the root, lower for the first cut of spring).

The one-third rule: never cut more than a third of the grass height at once, or you weaken it and leave it yellow. The robot respects it effortlessly, cutting 2-3 mm every day. With a manual mower in summer it's almost impossible to respect it if you go away for a weekend and come back with the lawn shot up.

Compared with petrol, both the electric mower and the robot are a clear environmental improvement: zero fumes, much less noise and, with mulching, no green waste. Between the two electric options, the robot uses a bit more total electricity but completely eliminates green waste and reduces watering and feeding; the net balance depends on your electricity mix. The point to watch with the robot is nocturnal wildlife: program it not to run at night and the hedgehogs, which curl into a ball instead of fleeing, are not in danger.

When the robot does NOT pay off

  1. Very small lawn (less than 100 m²). You cut it in 10-15 minutes with a mower. The robot is pure convenience, hard to justify on money.
  2. Very fragmented garden with flower beds, gravel paths, steps and pots everywhere: the wire robot struggles, you have to "chop" the installation into several areas and some end up as "islands" you have to cut by hand anyway.
  3. Seasonal use (a second home you visit four times a year): there's no lawn to maintain daily, which is where the robot shines. There, a normal mower.
  4. Tight budget and you like cutting: a good €150-250 mower with a mulching function does the job for decades.
  5. Areas with lots of hedgehogs if you can't guarantee it stops at night. Models with a sensor and schedule solve it, but you have to set it up properly and stick to it.
  6. Lawn with lots of surface roots, pine cones or stones: it blunts blades at high speed and the robot can get stuck or tipped over.
  7. Garden surrounded by very dense trees if you want a wire-free model: the GPS signal fails under closed canopies.
  8. Terrain with a slope above the robot's rating: it will slip and leave dry patches on the hill.

When the robot is a great buy

  • A lawn of 200 to 3,000 m² more or less continuous, with or without moderate slopes.
  • You want a "golf course" lawn without spending time on it.
  • You have back, knee or mobility problems, or simply don't want to spend Saturdays cutting.
  • You travel often and the lawn gets away from you in summer.
  • The noise of the petrol mower on a Sunday morning bothers you (and your neighbours).
  • You want to reduce the lawn's watering and feeding effortlessly (permanent mulching helps both).
  • You have children and the lawn is always "in use" when you'd want to cut it: the robot does it while nobody's watching.

The middle option many people ignore: manual mulching

A mower with a mulching function (€150-300 electric or battery) gives you a large part of the robot's benefit — fine clippings that act as fertiliser, no bag to empty, denser lawn, less waste — while keeping manual control and for a fraction of the price. The key is to cut frequently and lightly: if you let two weeks go by, mulching accumulates too many clippings and forms "balls" of grass that smother the lawn and have to be raked.

Cutting once a week in season (twice if the lawn grows a lot in spring), the result with manual mulching is very decent. Case study: house with 450 m² of lawn in two areas

A reader wrote to us with this scenario: a plot with 450 m² of lawn split into a 150 m² front garden and a 300 m² back one, joined by a 1.2 m passage next to the house; maximum slope of 15%; a tomato plant and a border to avoid; and about three hours a week spent cutting and edging with a 12-year-old petrol mower.

  • Cost of carrying on as before (5 years): ~150 h/year of their time + a predictable mower repair (~€120) + fuel and blades (~€150).
  • Robot option: a Gardena Sileno City or similar (rated for 600 m², 33% headroom), about €900, with boundary wire they install themselves in a morning surrounding the border as an island. It crosses the 1.2 m passage without a problem. Total cost over 5 years: ~€1,150. It gives them back almost all that time.

Recommendation: robot. The slope is low, the passage is generous, the garden is continuous within each area and the time saving is enormous. If the passage had been 50 cm, it would have been two independent areas and the calculation would change.

Common myths about robot lawn mowers

  • "They leave furrows and little paths." Modern robots with GPS or RTK navigation vary the pattern every session and don't mark paths, except at the entry to the base, which is solved with a guide wire or by changing its position.
  • "They don't cut well because the blades are tiny." Precisely because they cut little each day they don't need big blades. The result is more uniform than a mower's.
  • "They get stolen." Mid and high-range ones have a PIN, alarm and GPS with location. Without the PIN, a stolen robot is a trackable paperweight.
  • "They use a lot of electricity." Between €8 and €25 a year. Less than having a small extra fridge.
  • "They're no use if you have a dog." They are; the dog learns to ignore it in two days. You just have to pick up the poo before it works and program it for daytime.
  • "Whichever one you buy first will do." False: if you fall short on area or slope, the robot struggles, ages fast and leaves dry patches. The 30-50% headroom is the most important thing about the whole purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Does the robot use a lot of electricity?

No. Between €8 and €25 a year depending on the garden size. It uses little and only while charging at the base; the rest of the time, cutting, the consumption is minimal.

Can I have a robot and a mower at the same time?

It's the ideal, and what most people who have a robot do. The robot for daily lawn maintenance, and a mower or strimmer for the edges, the new areas, the "islands" the robot can't reach and the very tall grass after holidays.

And in winter what do I do with the lawn?

The lawn barely grows, so the robot rests stored dry. One or two passes with the manual mower over the whole winter is enough, more to collect leaves than to cut.

Can the robot cope with a lawn that hasn't been cut for a month?

No. If the lawn is very tall, first you have to bring it down with a normal mower in two or three passes (respecting the one-third rule); then the robot maintains it. That's why many users keep a mower even if they have a robot.

Is a robot greener than a mower?

Compared with petrol, much greener: zero direct emissions, much less noise and permanent mulching reduces watering and feeding. Compared with an electric mower, the balance is similar; the robot's advantage is above all the time, the lawn quality and the complete elimination of green waste.

Is a cheap robot under €400 worth it?

For a small, flat garden under 300 m², a well-sized entry-level robot can work for years. For gardens with slope, several areas or more area, the reliability and navigation of models from €700 up make a big difference.

Does the robot leave the lawn uneven if it rains a lot?

If the lawn grows very fast in spring and the robot is at the limit of its capacity, it can end up a bit irregular for a few days. With a robot bought with headroom and well programmed, no. Adjust the cutting frequency upwards in spring.

Can I use the robot only in summer and store it the rest of the year?

Yes, and it's the usual thing: a season from March-April to October-November depending on the climate, and stored for the winter. In areas with mild winters where the lawn keeps growing a bit, you can let it work on dry days.
