Take a plan of your plot, or draw it by hand on graph paper. Note down these five figures and the choice narrows itself to two or three models.
- Lawn area in square metres. Just the lawn, not the total plot: subtract the house, the terrace, the flower beds, the pool and the paths. It's the figure that matters most. Measure it by area if your garden has several separate ones.

Installation and first weeks
With boundary wire
- Set aside a morning. Cut the lawn to normal height before you start.
- Place the base station in a flat area, with 2-3 m of straight wire on each side and a protected power outlet (under an eave or in a watertight box).
- Fix the boundary wire with pegs following the edge, respecting the distance the template in the box indicates: about 30 cm next to a wall, 35 next to a flower bed, and 0 if the lawn borders paving at the same height (so the robot cuts to the edge on that side).
- Surround each obstacle (tree, border, pond) with wire forming an "island", with the outgoing and return wire together and close.
- Install one or two guide wires that cross the lawn: they help the robot get back to base quickly and spread out the wear of the entry, which otherwise gets marked as a little path.
- Make the splices well with the included watertight connectors: a badly made splice is the number-one cause of "robot outside limits" a few weeks later.
- In 3-4 weeks the lawn swallows the wire and it can't be seen.

First two weeks (any system): check where it's going every day. There's almost always a corner where it gets stuck, a slope where it slips or a badly measured stretch. Start with the cutting height high and lower it bit by bit over a month; if the lawn was very tall, give it a preliminary pass with the normal mower, because the robot can't cope with very long grass.
Maintenance and winterising
- Blades: change them every 4-8 weeks depending on the area and the toughness of the lawn. A set costs a few euros and is changed in 2 minutes with a screwdriver. Blunt blades = a cut that frays the tip of the grass (it looks white) and more battery consumption.
- Cleaning: brush the chassis and the blade disc every 1-2 weeks; thorough clean with a low-pressure hose once a month. Never a pressure washer (water gets into the sensors and the motor).

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe with children and pets?
Current models stop the blades instantly when they detect lifting or tipping, they move slowly (less than 1 km/h) and the blades are small and pivoting. Even so, don't let children play around it while it's working and program it not to run at night, because of hedgehogs, which curl up instead of fleeing and can be injured.
Does it leave the lawn better than a normal mower?
Yes, clearly. By cutting 2-3 mm each pass, several times a week, the lawn tillers (puts out more shoots from the base), thickens up to cover the dry patches and smother the moss, and the tiny clippings act as fertiliser. The lawn ends up denser, greener and needs less water and less fertiliser.
Does it work in the rain?
Most do. If you don't want it walking on the wet lawn in spring so as not to leave ruts in the soft grass, almost all let you program a pause with a rain sensor or by time slot.
And if I have the garden split into two plots separated by the road?
You'll need two robots, or to move one by hand between the two areas. No model crosses public roads or pavements.
How long does it take to cut 500 m²?
A robot properly sized for 500 m² takes 2-4 hours per session and does 1-2 sessions a day depending on the schedule. It doesn't need to be out all day; in fact, the more headroom it has, the fewer hours it works and the longer its components last.
Can I leave the robot in the garden all winter?
Not advisable. Store it charged and clean somewhere dry between November and March. Damp and frost shorten the life of the battery and the circuits.
Does it cut the garden edges well?
It leaves about 10-15 cm uncut at the outer boundary. You have to go over the edges with a strimmer or an edger every 2-3 weeks, or install the wire flush with paving at the same height so the robot cuts to the edge on that side. Some models have an "edge cutting" function that shifts the path.

What happens if the boundary wire is cut?
