The most effective organic pesticides: a complete usage guide
Insecticidal soap, neem oil, Bacillus thuringiensis, pyrethrins, sulphur and copper: what each one is for, doses, when to apply them, mixes and precautions.
"Organic" doesn't mean "harmless" or "not very effective". Well chosen and well applied, these organic pesticides control almost any problem in a home garden and respect the beneficial insects much more than a broad-spectrum synthetic insecticide. But each one has a specific target and specific limits: insecticidal soap doesn't work against caterpillars, Bt doesn't work against aphids, sulphur scorches the leaf in heat, and pyrethrin — even though it's "natural" — is toxic to bees. Using the right product for each case, at the right dose and at the right moment, is what makes the difference between solving a problem and just scaring the bugs.

1. Insecticidal soap (potassium soap)
Against: aphids, whitefly, young scale (crawlers), thrips, and as a support against spider mite.
How it acts: it dissolves the waxy cuticle that protects soft-bodied insects and causes them to dehydrate and collapse. It acts only by direct contact: if you don't wet the bug at the moment of application, it does nothing to it, and once dry it leaves no active residue.
Rough dose: 1-2% in water (10-20 ml per litre of concentrate; always follow the label).
When: at dusk, out of direct sun, wetting the underside of the leaves and the shoots very well. Repeat every 5-7 days, 2 or 3 times.
Precautions: very low risk. Harmless to people and pets once dry. It can damage very tender leaves or some sensitive plants (ferns, some succulents, plants with a bloom): test on one leaf and wait 48 h before treating the whole plant. It's the most-used product in an organic garden.
2. Neem oil (azadirachtin)
Against: a wide spectrum of sucking and chewing insects; it interrupts larval moulting, reduces appetite, slows egg-laying and repels.
How it acts: by ingestion and by contact, disrupting the insect's hormonal system. Slow effect: you won't see immediate deaths, but the pest stops growing and disappears in 3-7 days.
Rough dose: 3-5 ml of pure oil per litre + a few drops of insecticidal soap as an emulsifier, in lukewarm water (the oil doesn't mix with cold water).
When: at dusk. Don't apply in strong heat (it stains the leaf) or in full flowering to protect the bees, which can be affected if they ingest it.
Precautions: keep away from ponds and fish (it's toxic to aquatic life). With cats, be careful: don't apply it on plants the cat nibbles.

3. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)
Against: butterfly and moth caterpillars (cabbage, tomato, box, geranium, processionary, codling moth) with the variety kurstaki; mosquito and black fly larvae with israelensis.
How it acts: a bacterium that produces a crystalline protein that, when ingested by a lepidopteran larva, destroys its gut wall. The caterpillar stops eating within hours and dies in 2-3 days.
Rough dose: as per the label (usually 1-2 g/L).
When: at the first caterpillars or the first holes, and with small caterpillars (they're more vulnerable). At dusk, because ultraviolet sunlight degrades it. Repeat after rain or after 7-10 days.
Precautions: the most selective product there is. Completely harmless to bees, ladybirds, other insects that aren't caterpillars, birds, pets and people. It only affects the lepidopteran larvae that ingest it. It expires: it loses viability in 1-2 years and sooner if stored in the heat.
4. Natural pyrethrins
Against: fast knock-down effect for aphids, whitefly, beetles, bugs, thrips.
How it acts: a fast-acting contact neurotoxin (paralysis in minutes). It degrades in 1-2 days in the light.
Rough dose: as per the label; it usually comes very diluted, ready or almost ready to use.
Precautions: it's the "strongest" on this list and the least advisable as a first option. It's toxic to bees and to aquatic life, and it's not selective: it also kills the natural predators (ladybirds, lacewings), which can cause a pest rebound a few weeks later. Save it for very virulent one-off outbreaks, apply it at night when the bees are no longer flying, and never on plants in flower. Use it as a last organic resort.
5. Sulphur
Against: powdery mildew, rust and, as a miticide, spider mite and other mites.
How it acts: a contact fungicide and miticide, preventive. It releases vapours that stop spore germination and affect the mites.
Formats: wettable (dissolves and is sprayed, the most used) or powder (dusted with a duster, for large surfaces).
When: preventive, before the fungus spreads, and at the first symptom. Never above 28-30 °C (it scorches the leaf) or within the 3 weeks before or after an oil treatment (they react and scorch).
Precautions: low risk to people and bees. It can irritate eyes and airways during application: use a mask and goggles. It slightly lowers the soil pH if applied a lot.
6. Copper (Bordeaux mixture, oxychloride, hydroxide)
Against: downy mildew, bacterial diseases, shot hole, scab, olive peacock spot, rose black spot.
How it acts: a contact fungicide and bactericide, preventive. The copper ions stop spore germination.
When: preventive, in autumn (after leaf fall on fruit trees) and early spring, and during humid spring on tomato and grapevine. Repeat after every rain.
Precautions: copper accumulates in the soil and is toxic to worms and microfauna in excess. Limit to 2-4 applications a year and respect the dose. Toxic to fish: don't apply near ponds. It can cause phytotoxicity (spots) on some young plants in cold, humid weather.

Good application practice
- Spray at dusk, with no wind and no direct sun. Never at midday in summer.
- Wet the underside of the leaves well: that's where most pests hide and where many fungi germinate.
- Respect the flowering: don't treat plants with open flowers so as not to harm the pollinators, especially with neem and pyrethrin.
- Alternate products with different modes of action between treatments to stop the pest becoming resistant (it happens even with organic products if overused).
- Prepare only the amount you're going to use: many (Bt, soap, liquid feeds) lose effectiveness within hours of being mixed with water.
- Use water that isn't too hard: very chalky water inactivates some products. If your water is very hard, let it stand for 24 h or use rainwater.
- Clean the sprayer well after each use, especially if you go from a fungicide to an insecticide or from a herbicide (better a sprayer just for herbicides and another for the rest).
- Use gloves and, with sulphur and copper, a mask and goggles.
- Store products in their original container, in a cool dry place, out of reach of children and pets, and respect the safety interval on vegetables and fruit.
Mixes: what you can and can't
- Compatible: insecticidal soap + neem oil (in fact, the soap works as an emulsifier for the neem). It's the most common mix and very effective against sucking insects.
- Compatible: Bt + insecticidal soap (the soap improves the Bt's adhesion to the leaf).
- DON'T mix: sulphur with oils of any kind (they scorch the plant). Leave at least 3 weeks between one and the other.
- DON'T mix: copper with acidic products, with foliar feeds or with soap without checking compatibility (it can precipitate).
- When in doubt, apply the products separately a few days apart. There's no harm in doing two passes; there is harm in scorching the plant with an incompatible mix.
Home support preparations (they don't replace the above)
These preparations have a preventive and strengthening effect, not a curative one. They work well combined with good cultivation practice, but don't expect them to stop an established pest.
- Nettle liquid feed: 1 kg of fresh nettle per 10 L of water, fermented 1-2 weeks stirring daily, strained and diluted to 5-10% for watering (nitrogen feed and tonic) or to 20% for spraying (aphid repellent). It smells strong during fermentation.
- Horsetail decoction: 100 g of dried plant per litre, boiled 20 min, rested 24 h, diluted 1:5 and sprayed. It supplies silica that hardens the tissues and hinders fungal penetration (powdery mildew, rust, mild downy mildew).
- Garlic infusion: 3-4 crushed cloves per litre of hot water, rested, strained and sprayed. A mild repellent for aphids and mites.
- Wood ash: dusted on the damp leaf, it hinders the advance of powdery mildew and bothers snails. In excess it makes the soil alkaline.
What NOT to use even if you see it online
- Dishwashing or hand soap: it contains degreasers, perfumes and additives that damage the leaf cuticle. Use plant-protection insecticidal soap.
- Diluted bleach: phytotoxic; it scorches the plant and damages the soil.
- Household insecticides (cockroaches, flies): they aren't evaluated for plants or food, they contaminate the soil and kill all the beneficial insects.
- Motor oil, diesel or petroleum as "winter oil": toxic and persistent. Use agricultural paraffin oil.
- Nicotine (tobacco water): very toxic to people and pets by contact and inhalation; banned as a plant-protection product for years.
- Salt: as a "home herbicide" it ruins the soil for years and seeps into neighbouring areas.
Minimum kit to treat well
- A 5 L pre-pressure sprayer with an adjustable lance (jet for outbreaks, cone to cover). One just for everything except herbicides, and a separate (labelled) one if you use herbicides.
- Nitrile gloves, goggles and, with sulphur and copper, an FFP2 mask.
- A measuring jug and syringe to dose the concentrate precisely.
- A notebook where you record what you applied, where, when and with what result: in two seasons you'll know what works in your garden.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence to buy these products?
For home use and in the small garden formats (the ones sold in garden centres and supermarkets), no. Professional products, large formats and some products classified as hazardous do require the plant-protection product handler's licence.
Are insecticidal soap and "black soap" the same?
They're similar: both are potash-based soaps. Traditional black soap sometimes contains linseed oil and works similarly as a contact insecticide, but to treat plants use one labelled as a plant-protection product, with controlled concentration and purity and no perfumes or additives.
How long does neem take to work?
Between 3 and 7 days. It doesn't kill instantly: it breaks the pest's cycle (the larvae don't moult, the adults don't lay eggs, feeding decreases). If you need a fast effect on a specific outbreak, start with insecticidal soap (immediate knock-down) and follow with neem (persistence) to stop it bouncing back.
Are they safe for bees?
Bt, insecticidal soap (once dry), sulphur and copper (on a plant with no flowers) are low risk. Neem and especially pyrethrin can harm them: always apply them at dusk, when the bees are no longer flying, and never on open flowers. The organic garden relies precisely on having lots of pollinators and predators, so protect them.
Can I use them in the veg garden and eat the vegetables?
Yes: insecticidal soap, neem, Bt, sulphur and copper are approved in organic horticulture. Respect the safety interval on the label (0 to 5 days depending on the product and the crop) and wash the vegetables well before eating them.
Do organic products expire?
Yes. Bt and microorganism preparations lose viability in 1-2 years (and sooner if stored in heat or sun). Insecticidal soap and neem oil last longer but also degrade and neem goes rancid. Buy containers of the size you'll use in a season or two.
Is an organic treatment always enough?
For 90% of the pests and diseases in a home garden, yes, if you act in time and repeat as needed. For quarantine pests, large trees or very advanced infestations, sometimes you need a professional. And always: prevention and encouraging the natural predators solve more than any product.
Can I make my own insecticidal soap or neem at home?
Home-made potassium soap (with potash and oil) is possible but hard to standardise in concentration, and it works out expensive compared with a commercial one. Neem has to be bought. What you can make at home are liquid feeds and macerations (nettle, horsetail, garlic) as preventive support.
Are paraffin oil and neem oil the same?
No. Paraffin oil (or winter mineral oil) is an oil that acts by smothering eggs and scale, and is used on fruit trees during winter dormancy. Neem acts by hormonal disruption and is used in full growth. They're complementary.
How do I apply Bt to a tall tree with processionary?
With a backpack sprayer with a telescopic lance, or a higher-pressure pump with a hose. Treat when the caterpillars are small (autumn) and in the canopy feeding, before they come down and form nests. For very large trees, a professional with height equipment.
Do organic products stain clothes or paving?
Copper stains paving and clothes blue-green, and it's hard to remove. Sulphur leaves a yellow powder. Soap and neem don't stain once dry. Protect the ground under the plant if you're going to treat near a light-coloured paved area.
