Drip irrigation: a complete DIY installation guide

Components, flow calculation, step-by-step assembly, how many drippers per plant, seasonal scheduling, maintenance and tweaks to save up to 50% water.

Drip irrigation takes water drop by drop right to the root of each plant. Compared with a sprinkler it uses 30 to 50% less, doesn't wet the leaves (fewer fungi), doesn't water the weeds in the paths, works with very low pressure and installs in an afternoon with no special tools or building work. It's by far the best way to water beds, hedges, the veg garden, shrubs, fruit trees and pots, and to go on holiday knowing the garden is looked after.

This guide covers the whole process, from the part that goes on the tap to the August schedule: the components in order and what each is for; how to calculate the flow rate you need (easier than it looks); step-by-step assembly; how many drippers and of what flow for each type of plant; scheduling season by season with a table; maintenance so it doesn't clog; the most common mistakes that make an installation fail; and adaptations for well water, large gardens and pots. The components, in order from the tap

A drip installation is put together like a train: each part behind the previous one, in this exact order.

  1. Timer: screws onto the tap and turns on the water according to the schedule you set. Battery-powered (the norm at home) or mains. Choose one with at least 2 outputs if you have more than one zone, and with a manual watering option for testing.
  2. Mesh filter: traps the lime, sand and suspended particles that clog the drippers. Essential, especially with hard or well water. It cleans in 30 seconds under the tap.
  3. Pressure reducer: drip works at 1-1.5 bar; the domestic mains gives 3-4. Without a reducer, the connectors pop off with the water hammer when it opens and the drippers don't compensate well. There are fixed ones (1.5 bar) or adjustable ones with a gauge.
  4. 16 mm main tubing: the polyethylene "trunk" that runs around the garden following the beds. Sold in rolls of 25, 50 or 100 m. For large installations, the trunk can be 20 or 25 mm and the branches 16.
  5. 4 mm micro-tubing: the thin "branches" that go from the 16 mm tubing to each pot or plant away from the main line.
  6. Drippers: better pressure-compensating (they give the same flow even if the pressure varies or there is a slope) of 2 or 4 litres/hour. There are button ones (pushed into the tubing), stake ones (with a ground support, for pots) and clip ones on micro-tubing.
  7. Fittings: elbows, tees, repair joiners, reducers, end-of-line plugs or valves, and fixing pegs every metre.

There is also inline dripper tubing: 16 mm tubing that already has factory drippers every 20, 30 or 50 cm. It's the best option for hedges, veg garden rows and dense borders, because it saves you inserting dripper by dripper. It comes with pressure-compensating and anti-drain drippers.

For long tubing runs (more than 15-20 m) or sloping gardens, always use pressure-compensating drippers. Cheap non-compensating ones water a lot at the start of the line and almost nothing at the end, and you don't notice until a plant dries out in August.

Calculating the flow rate: two checks

Add up the flow of all the drippers you're going to fit. Example: 30 plants × 1 dripper of 4 L/h = 120 L/h. Now check two things:

1. That your tap gives that flow

Fill a 10-litre bucket with the tap fully open and time it. If it takes 30 seconds, your tap gives 1,200 L/h; if it takes 60 seconds, it gives 600 L/h. Any domestic tap gives more than enough for a normal drip installation.

2. That you don't exceed the maximum for the 16 mm tubing

A 16 mm tube comfortably moves up to about 240-250 L/h. If you add more, the pressure drops along the way and the last drippers water little. The solution: split the garden into two or more zones, each on one output of the timer, watering at different times (for example, zone A at 6:00 and zone B at 7:00).

Pressure is usually not a problem with drip: it works well even with 1 bar, which is plenty in any home on the municipal mains. Only on balconies with tall plants or with a rooftop tank right above can it be very tight; there, 2 L/h drippers and short lines.

Step-by-step assembly

  1. Screw onto the tap, in this order: timer → filter → pressure reducer → 16 mm start connector.
  2. Lay out the main tubing following the beds, forming a route that passes close to all the plants. Leave it in the sun for 15 minutes so it softens and is easier to bend without kinking.
  3. Fix it with pegs every metre and at every curve, so it doesn't move or jump when pressurised.
  4. At each plant, punch the 16 mm tubing with the punch that comes with the kit and insert a 4 mm connector, or push a button dripper straight in if the plant is right next to the line.
  5. Run a short length of 4 mm micro-tubing from the connector to the base of the plant and finish with the dripper, staked about 10-15 cm from the trunk.
  6. Close the end of each line with a plug or, better, a small valve you can use to flush each season.
  7. Flush: turn on the water with no drippers for a minute to expel the manufacturing dirt from the tubing. Then fit the drippers.
  8. Full test: put the timer on manual, let the water run and go plant by plant checking they all drip. Adjust any that fail and look for leaks at the connectors.

General rule: spread the water around the whole root area, not at a single point. A plant watered with a single dripper against the trunk develops roots only on that side, ends up unstable and part of the root ball dries out.

Scheduling season by season

The golden rule: few long waterings, not many short ones. A long watering soaks 30-40 cm deep and the root goes down to look for the water, which makes the plant more resistant to heat and to supply cuts. A short, frequent watering only wets the surface and creates dependent plants that get stressed on the first hot day.

Why at dawn? Less evaporation, the plant faces the day already hydrated, and any drop that has splashed a leaf dries quickly with the sun (fewer fungi). Watering at dusk leaves moisture all night and favours fungal diseases and snails.

How to know if you're watering right: the day after a watering, dig with your hand next to a plant. The soil should be moist to 20-30 cm. If it's only moist at the surface, increase the duration; if it's waterlogged deep down, reduce it.

Maintenance

  • Every 3-4 weeks: clean the mesh filter under the tap (more often if your water is hard or from a well).
  • End of season: open the line ends and let the water run under pressure to flush out the sediment that has built up inside the tubing.
  • Before frosts: remove the timer and store it indoors (the water left inside bursts it when it freezes). Empty the tubing by lifting one end.
  • Clogged dripper: take it out, blow it or clean it with a pin; if it's calcified, replace it (they cost pennies). Never leave a clogged dripper "it'll sort itself out": the plant suffers within a week.
  • Spring: check that no mole, hoe or frost has punctured or split the tubing over the winter. A repair joiner fixes any cut in 30 seconds.
  • Once a year: run a citric acid or diluted vinegar solution (1:10) through the installation for an hour to dissolve the internal lime, and flush thoroughly.

Special adaptations

Well water with sand or a lot of lime

Fit a finer disc or mesh filter (120-150 mesh) and clean it frequently. For very loaded water, a small settling tank before the installation, or anti-drain drippers that don't suck up soil when they close. An annual citric acid treatment is almost compulsory.

Large garden (more than 500 m²)

Split it into several zones with 24 V solenoid valves and a multi-zone timer; use 20 or 25 mm main tubing for the "trunk" and branch off to 16 mm laterals. Consider a higher-flow filter at the inlet and a gauge to monitor the pressure.

Pots and balcony only

A specific balcony kit with 4 mm tubing, a small tap timer and adjustable drippers per pot. In summer it may need 2 short passes a day. If there's no outdoor tap, there are timers that connect to a raised barrel with a small pump.

Veg garden

Drip tape or inline dripper tubing, one line per furrow, with drippers every 20-30 cm. It can be lifted and stored at the end of the season. It combines very well with straw mulch to reduce evaporation even further.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the filter or the pressure reducer "to save money". It's the number-one cause of installations that fail within a month.
  • Putting a single dripper against the trunk of a large shrub. The root concentrates there and the plant ends up unstable with part of the root ball dry.
  • Watering 5 minutes every day. It only wets the first few centimetres and encourages surface roots that can't take a day without watering.
  • Burying the 16 mm tubing. Leave it on the surface under the mulch: that way you see leaks instantly and can modify the installation without digging.
  • Not flushing at assembly. The manufacturing dirt clogs half the drippers on the first day.
  • Mixing pressure-compensating and non-compensating drippers on the same line. The distribution becomes chaotic.
  • Not checking the installation before going on holiday. A clogged dripper or a loose connector can dry out a plant or drain the zone in two weeks.
  • Leaving the tubing in full sun with no mulch. The UV rays make it brittle in 2-3 years.

Combining drip with a good design of low-water plants and a soil well amended with organic matter (which holds more water) is the most effective way to have a garden with little water.

Frequently asked questions

Is drip irrigation any good for the lawn?

It's not ideal: the lawn needs the whole surface wet uniformly, and for that sprinklers are better. There is specific buried drip tubing for lawns (with anti-root drippers every 30 cm in a mesh), but it's a more technical and expensive installation, reserved for high-end ornamental lawns or areas where you can't spray.

How long does a drip installation last?

The 16 mm tubing, 8-10 years if it's under mulch and protected from direct sun. The drippers and micro-tubing are replaced bit by bit; they're the cheap, consumable part. The tap timer, 3-5 years.

Can I extend the installation later?

Yes, it's one of its great advantages. You cut the tubing wherever you want, put in a "tee" and add a new line. Just watch that you don't exceed the maximum flow of the zone (about 240 L/h per 16 mm tube).

Drip on the surface or buried?

On the surface under the mulch for beds, hedges and the veg garden: you see faults and modify it easily. Buried only makes sense in a lawn or where aesthetics and foot traffic demand it, and always with specific anti-root tubing.

How much water does it save compared with watering with a hose?

A huge amount: with a hose you wet everything (paths, weeds, leaves), a good part evaporates and it's hard to give exactly the right amount to each plant. Drip applies the water only at the root and in the programmed amount; the saving compared with a hose can exceed 60%, and compared with spray in beds, 40%.

What dripper flow should I choose, 2 or 4 L/h?

2 L/h for pots, perennials and sandy soils that drain fast (so the water doesn't escape before infiltrating). 4 L/h for shrubs, trees and clay soils, where you can give more flow without it being lost below the root.

Can I leave the drip running when I go on holiday for two weeks?

Yes, that's what it's for. Set the summer schedule, check that everything drips well before you leave and, if you can, ask someone to have a look mid-week in case a dripper clogs or a tube comes loose. Change the timer batteries before you go.

Does drip work with the pressure from a gravity tank?

Yes, if the tank is at least 1-1.5 m above the drippers (each metre of height gives 0.1 bar). Use low-flow drippers (2 L/h) and short lines, and maybe a small pressure pump if the garden is large.

How do I know how many litres my installation uses per month?

Add up the flow of all the drippers (L/h), multiply it by the watering hours per week and by 4.3 weeks. Example: 120 L/h × 3 h/week × 4.3 = 1,548 L/month in summer. A water meter for irrigation (cheap) tells you exactly.

Can drip and spray be combined on the same timer?

Yes, on different outputs or zones, because they need very different pressures and watering times. The drip zone waters for 40 min and the spray zone for 25 min, for example, each at its own time.

Is it hard to install for someone with no experience?

No. A medium-sized bed and veg garden installation goes together in an afternoon, with no tools beyond the punch in the kit and some scissors. The most laborious part is planning the route and placing each dripper. Large gardens with buried zones do need more skill or half a day of an installer.

Does the water come out very cold from the tubing and harm the plants?

No, except for the first burst. Since the tubing runs on the surface and you water in the morning, the water warms up quickly. Only in the depths of winter is it worth watering at midday so the water isn't freezing.
